Is It Spring? Or Is It the Dog Food?

This is a sponsored review by BlogHer and Purina.

Read what my dog Lady seems to think about ProPlan Selects from Purina. Please know, this post is sponsored by BlogHer and Purina ProPlan but the thoughts are my own.

What’s in it for you? The chance to win a $100 gift card – just for commenters right here on this page, this means odds are good! (Canadian readers, so sorry, BlogHer has limited winners to U.S. residents age 18 or older.)

The first signs of spring are everywhere here in St. Louis, so it’s no surprise that Lady, the Dog of My Life, shows signs of spring fever, just like her mom. (And small boys who love to fish!)

The great outdoors is one big tease. Windows are cracked to let in fresh almost-warm air. Randy squirrels race along the back fence. The daffodils have fought their way out of the winter earth, no flowers yet, but soon!

Still, for the last couple of weeks, my eight-year old Lady has shown more than her usual signs Inner Puppy. Early morning, she goes straight to the window to check what’s outside. She bounds – bounds! – to the back fir tree whether there’s a taunting squirrel or not. She comes back and dances – dances! – in anticipation of breakfast. She waits – mostly patiently! but not on her bed in my office as usual but instead at my feet – as the time approaches for our walk. She races – races! – from room to room to find the One Who Feeds Her Meat. She leaps – leaps! with excitement – when she hears the magic words, “Would you like to go to the country?”

So all this energy, all this verve, all this excitement, is it spring? Or could it be her new food?

You see, a few weeks back, the good folks at BlogHer and Purina invited me to give Lady a test run of a new dog food called ‘Selects’ from the Pro Plan family. They say it’s specially designed with real meat as the first ingredient and contains no corn, wheat, soy, preservatives or artificial colors or flavors.

(Crazy, I know. I’ve watched People Food nutrition labels forever. But it never occurred to me to check the nutrition label for Lady Food.)

Lady took to the new food right away. Even though Lady’s never shown signs of a sensitive stomach or bowels, to make it easier on her system to adjust, for three days, I gave her 1/3 new food and 2/3 old food. Then for another three days, I switched the proportions to 2/3 new food and 1/3 old food. (For a dog with stomach issues, a slower introduction would be better.)

So the truth is, I don’t know if it’s spring or the food. I just know that Lady’s happy it’s spring and she’s happy with her new food.

And so am I!
